Joint Action Group – A Path to a Plural and Effective Opposition
The struggle for democracy in Iran faces a major challenge: the lack of an organized and effective opposition. This issue became even more evident after the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, as the Iranian people experienced the absence of a unified force to lead the fight for freedom and democracy.
Who We Are
The Joint Action Group is an initiative aimed at bringing together political groups and human rights non-profit organizations and activists—both inside and outside Iran—who, despite ideological differences, are committed to a democratic, secular and pluralistic vision for Iran.
Our foundation is built on collective action and democratic decision-making. After 1 year of preparation and negotiation, on 1 December 2024, the first general meeting of the Joint Action Group took place, with 17 groups and several individual members in attendance. During this meeting:
- The internal rules of the organisation were reviewed and approved.
- Two democratic elections were held to select:
- A five-member executive team to lead organisational efforts.
- A five-member arbitration team responsible for oversight, ensuring transparency and accountability and managing disputes.
Our Objectives
By fostering joint efforts, Joint Action Group aims to:
- Strengthen cooperation and participation within civil society.
- Create a sense of belonging among activists.
- Inspire hope through achievable goals.
- Empower individuals and groups to take part in shaping Iran’s future.
- Promote ethical commitment to democratic change.
- Conduct proactive, targeted political advocacy.
- Create a space for democracy-focused organizations and individuals while fostering constructive dialogue among opposition groups with diverse ideologies.
- Facilitate political education through activism.
Our Core Values
Joint Action Group offers two ways to participate:
- Full Membership Agreement – for those committed to all JAG principles.
- Partnership Pact – for individuals or groups who share the goal of a democratic Iran but may not fully align with all JAG values.
Every member of Joint Action Group upholds the following principles:
- Commitment to democracy – working towards a free and democratic Iran.
- Secular governance – ensuring the separation of religion and state.
- Merit-based leadership – rejecting hereditary or appointed rule.
- Human rights – adhering to global human rights principles.
- Protection of public interests – safeguarding Iran’s national resources, cultural heritage, and the collective well-being of its people.
- Democratic, ethical, and legal cooperation – respecting freedom of thought and speech.
- Territorial integrity – supporting a unified Iran while advocating for equal rights for all citizens.
Together, through joint action, we can build a plural and effective opposition and take meaningful steps towards a free Iran.
